E.L. Lane: Artist In the Making

An Anime Artist that is. . .

Interview with E.L. Lane

On September 30th, 2008, the chairman of the DA-C, known as SteveJones313 on Deviantart took the time to interview me. ^^; I just figured I'd share it, to 1.) show you how insane I can be at times, and 2.) to provide you with a few minutes of entertainment. Enjoy.

"On The Sofa. . . with LoneSWolf"

More random than an audience with Ross Noble and more anticipated than a "Friends" one-time Reunion Christmas Special, it's the return of the dA Corner "On The Sofa"!!!!

Hello everyone, my name is SteveJones313 and this is the return of the greatest interview show since "Jay Leno Online", it's "On The Sofa". My guest tonight is an artist who, whilst possessing great talent, is also one of the funniest and random people I've ever had the pleasure of speaking to. Hailing the the great US of A, she is the one, the only, the incredibly unique :iconloneswolf:!!!

Wolf, welcome to the show!

:iconloneswolf: *walks in in her pj's and black fluffy slippers* Yo! I'm in your room, eatting your flapjacks. . .even though I have NO idea what they are. *sits on couch*

*SteveJones313 Er, you realise this is a studio, right? And you're wearing pyjamas?

:iconloneswolf: Yes, but I was too lazy to change. XD and my pjs are comfy @.@ don't take away the comfy ness of them. I'd be naked underneath @.@ No one needs to see that.

*SteveJones313 Well they're lovely pyjamas.

:iconloneswolf: yes they are. And they're comfy too. XD

*SteveJones313 Well this is your first visit to the show and we've completely revamped the set since our last interview *points to all the fancy lighting and the super-comfy sofas* - what do you think?

:iconloneswolf: *___* Prreetttyyyy lights *stares for a minute or two* *snaps out of it* *bounces a little on the couch* Can't sleep. Couch will eat me!

*SteveJones313 I'm wondering if it's a good idea that I'm drinking Jack Daniels as I interview you...a bit late now. ^^;

:iconloneswolf: So pretty much you're saying that anything you ask if it's like, uber odd, we should blame it on Mr. Daniels. *nods with a thumbs up* got it!

*SteveJones313 I think it's always a good idea to have a back-up story when things go terribly wrong :p

:iconloneswolf: As long as none of us end up losing our parents after choking on cake, and we become orphans.

*SteveJones313 Ok, how the hell would one of us choking on a cake cause us to lose our parents?

:iconloneswolf: <.< Fairies. Straight up Steve. Fairies. I don't think i shoulda ate that cereal before coming here. XDD

*SteveJones313 The fairies? As in the evil cake fairies?

:iconloneswolf: Yes. They'll hunt you down, make you choke on cake, which'll cause you to lose your parents, and make you an orphan. . .cuz they're just creepy like that 0.o XDD

*SteveJones313 But surely your parents would have to choke on the cake for you to become an orphan?

:iconloneswolf: Yeah, you're probably right XD I blame my cereal

*SteveJones313 Well let's get to the first question, if at all possible.

:iconloneswolf: Sure. . . let's attempt this. XD and let's run from the evil cake fairies in the process.

*SteveJones313 Well obviously, the big thing happening in the dA Corner world, if not the dA World is the dA Corner Awards Semi-Final. What are your thoughts?

:iconloneswolf: @.@ There's so many good artists. And with being a n00b here, I'm actually taking time out of my busy flapjack eatting schedule to look at all the members and deciding on who I would like to choose. . .but it's really tough. And you won't let me do the eenie meanie miney moe game to help me either if I can't decide XD Though, I doubt that would happen.

*SteveJones313 There are some damn talented people in the club. From artists to photographers to writers, just so much choice. How excited are you about the awards?

:iconloneswolf: Uhhh. . .*chuckles* I'm anxious to see who will be able going to the semi finals, and so forth. Also, being able to check out more talent is a plus as well.

*SteveJones313 So from a reletively newer-member's perspective, just how hard is it picking a nomination for these awards?

:iconloneswolf: You have actually no idea. XD I've been checking out about 10 people a day and gazing through their galleries, and then going back to the previous ten and so on and so forth to try to come to a desicion. @.@ It's like, trying to figure out what to go for first at a buffet table. I can't decide, so I stand there for like ten minutes looking like an idiot while drool comes outta my mouth.

*SteveJones313 On the plus side you have a month to vote, so it gives you time to make your decision?

:iconloneswolf: Yeah. . .if I can even attempt to make a decision. I may forever be standing there with drool hanging out of my mouth. x.X But you never know. . .I may come to a desicion eventually before the time limit expires.

*SteveJones313 Is there a particular award you're interested in, or rather, is there an award you're more interested in seeing who wins?

:iconloneswolf: I'm actually interested in seeing all the winners of each of the catergories, not just one. XD And I'd be cool if I won, or didn't win anything cuz it's the interweb.

*SteveJones313 So do you think it's a good thing that people can't vote for themselves, or should people be given the ability to vote for themselves?

:iconloneswolf: I think it's a good idea that people actually can't vote for themselves. Because, that would pretty much mean that everyone, well, excluding you of course, since you're not in this year, would have at least one vote. Possibly for each subject, and then that would mean that everyone would be a winner. . . wait, where was i going with this again. *Thinks for a moment* Okay, *gets back in the brain wiggly she had* so, with everybody voting for someone else, then we could have clear winners, and people that we could actually acknowledge for their talent.

*SteveJones313 I am in this year, you just can't vote for me for the Special Recognition Award, which we start voting for in the Finals.

:iconloneswolf: Ooooohhhh, apparently I've had a blonde moment. But then again, I haven't checked out the poll to vote at because I'm busy trying to decide who I want to nominate. Go blonde moments!!

*SteveJones313 Let's talk about you for a moment.

:iconloneswolf: Me. . . uh, whatever floats your boat, or sinks your ship. XD

*SteveJones313 Well you joined dA in January 31st 2004, almost 3 years before me - first question, why did you join at that time?

:iconloneswolf: When I joined DA, it was when I first started drawing. My older sister suggested to me about finding an art site and posting my work up, and getting helpful crituques to improve my work. But I didn't update very often because I didn't have a scanner until early this year. So, if you think about it, I wasn't really active on DA til earlier this year. XD

*SteveJones313 So it was the ownership of a scanner that made you more active?

:iconloneswolf: Yes, I mean, sure, I did draw during the years prior to me having a scanner, but I never had a chance to post them, and after talking with my sister, we decided that it was time for me to get a scanner, and actually use this account for something other then collecting dust.

*SteveJones313 So when did you first start drawing and what was it that made you think "you know, I want to draw"?

:iconloneswolf: God. . .that takes me back. I first started drawing when I was 10 years old in foster care. My foster parents at the time had gotten me an art set after seeing me doodle on my homework. They also figured it would be a de stresser since I had to be the strong one for my brother and I. Later, about 3 years later, I found anime, and started doodling that, and found I had a knack for it. Ever since then, I've been drawing or doodling every day.

*SteveJones313 So initially, it was basically something positive for you to get your young and creative mits into?

:iconloneswolf: Yeah. Without my foster parents, I don't think I would be the *crazy* person I am today. I owe them a lot, and I wish to one day find them, thank them, and show them what I kinda person I've become thanks to their influence.

*SteveJones313 So you're not with them anymore?

:iconloneswolf: *shakes head* No, I was with them for 1 year, 11 months, and 29 days. I'd have to say, that they were the people that brought the child out of me. My brother is LD, and so, being the younger one, I had to take care of him, cuz he didn't always understand. My foster parents took that into account, and during that time, I was able to be a child without any worries other then normal kid worries. They, in a sense, took a big burden off my shoulders, and taught me that it's okay to play and to have fun. That I didn't have to constantly worry. It's one of the few memories I can look back at, and smile. They made everything fun for me. And my foster parents are also the ones that helped create my favorite phrase I say to people 'If it's not fun, why do it?'

*SteveJones313 They sound like amazing people.

:iconloneswolf: They were. They were people who understood our postion. They knew we were scared, and unsure of our future. My brother and I were in shells. Slowly, and kindly, they brought us out of that. They were even wanting to adopt us if we weren't returned to our parents. That way, we could remain stable. They didn't want us to go back to what we were.

*SteveJones313 Ever tried finding them?

:iconloneswolf: I have. I still remember their names, but it makes things difficult when both parties have moved to different places. But I hope to find them somehow. XD my sister even told me that I should go on the Maury show, but I want to try to do it without some baby mama drama show in the mix videotaping our reactions. But I'd rather do it on my own.

*SteveJones313 You know what? I completely agree. People like Maury, Oprah or Steve Wilkos would jump on that story quicker than they could say "payday"!

:iconloneswolf: XD I want a payday now. . . I know, after a couple years of research, that my foster parents did adopt two girls if I remember correctly. I'm just glad that in the end, they did get children. ^^

*SteveJones313 So what's your current living situation?

:iconloneswolf: My current living situation is my sister *:iconcrazy-little-foxxx: *, her husband, and their two small children. . . who will eventually be raised as my little minions of terror. :evillaugh: And I'm in the mix, probably chillin downstairs in mah basement. It's a lively house. You always have something or someone getting into something, or causing chaos. o.o I often wonder how my sister deals with it XD

*SteveJones313 See, I usually use Jack Daniels and RPing to deal with my stress. That and I LOVE to wrestle.

:iconloneswolf: I noticed. *eyes the Jack Daniels on your table* XD Though, I'm not much of an RPer. I suck arse at it. But I don't usually deal with stress. When I end up getting stressed, I usually end up in the hospital with health issues. x.X *has been in the hospital 4 times due to those issues* So, I'm usually seen as a more laid back person.

*SteveJones313 Ok, you need to cool down - a glass of Jack?

:iconloneswolf: XD No, I don't drink often, if at all. Last time I got drunk, I was sick from a hangover for like 2 days. I'm a light weight, and not afraid to admit it.

*SteveJones313 How about a glass of pepsi?

:iconloneswolf: *pulls out an Mountain Dew from her pocket* I'm good. *takes a long swig* It's mah life blood. I drink waaayyy too much. almost 2 liters a day. I bet, if i was cut open, MD would pour out. Though, doctors think otherwise. T_T

*SteveJones313 So let's look into that a bit. Have you had many injuries?

:iconloneswolf: *starts counting on fingers* Busted knee, broken pinky finger, sprained elbow, sprained back, numerous other injuries to my back, and a broken wrist. Along with lazy eye, that I had two surgeries to fix. Other then that, I'm a perfectly, productive human.

*SteveJones313 So which war were you in?

:iconloneswolf: *laughs* Actually, a lot of them were from accidents. Whether they were car accidents, bike accidents, or accidents that happened at work. I'm a VERY klutzy person. Some of them were from abuse I had as a kid, but seeing as I don't remember much of it, I don't really have a problem with it.

*SteveJones313 I can sympathise with the injuries. How is your back now?

:iconloneswolf: Well, it's no longer raining, so I'm in no pain. X.x Rain and I don't mix when it comes to all of that. So I can be my goofy, odd ball, self.

*SteveJones313 Oh my sister, testify!

:iconloneswolf: XDD I don't do the whole testifying thing, but whatever floats your boat. *grins*

*SteveJones313 But testifying is damn fun.

:iconloneswolf: *hands you a bible* XD Then you can testify for us! *laughs*

*SteveJones313 Ok, let's not tempt me to rant, lol. Shall we move onto your status on dA?

:iconloneswolf: Sure. . .XD since this is the DA corner and all. And obviously, this is Deviantart.

*SteveJones313 On this show we like to look at the stats - it gives the show somekind of plot.

:iconloneswolf: *laughs* yay! my pitiful stats! XDD

*SteveJones313 It's ok - no one ever really watches this part anyway. Who likes math?

:iconloneswolf: . . . . I failed it. *laughs* or at least passed it with some iffy colors.

*SteveJones313 Or "colours" for those living in the UK.

:iconloneswolf: Yay for bastardized english!! *throws a mini party*

*SteveJones313 In regards to the Gallery stats, do you think anyone really cares about them, or do you think they're just an interest added feature on dA?

:iconloneswolf: I think they're just an added feature on DA. I personally could give a shit less about somebody's stats. To me, if the art is good, then I'll watch you, regardless of what your stats say.

*SteveJones313 I think you mean "I couldn't give any less of shit"

:iconloneswolf: Though, I wouldn't be surprised if there were people on DA that were obsessed with their stats. . . whatever about that shit statement XD It's a shitty statement. *laughs at her own corny-ness*

*SteveJones313 Basically you couldn't give any less of shit about the shitty statement?

:iconloneswolf: Yep, XDD. You're floating on my brain wiggly. . . XD How odd.

*SteveJones313 Well should we just throw this segment out the window and talk about something else? XD

:iconloneswolf: Suuuuurrrreee. . . but i still want a payday

*SteveJones313 Hell, it's your show! Tell me what to do!

:iconloneswolf: . . .you REALLY don't want me to answer that. *starts humming the 'I feel pretty' song from Anger Management* Awww man. . . *sighs* If anyone is interested in why I'm humming it, just go ahead and bug me. It will fill you with plenty of lol.

*SteveJones313 Well seeing as we touched upon the stats, let me ask you - what is YOUR favourite work from your gallery and why?

:iconloneswolf: Hmmm. . . . *starts peering at gallery* Well, in regards to my marker work, I'd have to say I like my work titled 'Time Is Almost Out'. And in regards to my colored pencil work, I'd have to say '.:ImAgInArY:.' is my favorite. But I can't just pick a favorite overall. Cuz I like all the works I do.

*SteveJones313 But isn't that a good thing, not being able to pick a favourite simply because you love all your works?

:iconloneswolf: Yeah. Because each of my works, even if it's for a friend, shows a little bit of me. Whether it be at the time that I drew it, colored it, or whatever. Each drawing is like a little piece of me for the world to see. Except its on paper, and not breathing, and eatting the fudge pops in your fridges. . . or whatever sweet treats you all have.

*SteveJones313 Or flapjacks.

:iconloneswolf: mmmm flapjacks *spaces out and starts drooling* God man. . . I'm going to make myself sound like a fucking glutton to these people. X.x and you're not helping with the food references T__T . . . damn you, now you're making me hungry.

*SteveJones313 Well let's talk more about art. What is your main inspiration?

:iconloneswolf: Music, people, my neice and nephew, random conversations. Anything in all actuallity. One time, I got inspired by a bug that was smooshed on my ceiling. It's body parts actually looked like a face. XD; So yeah, I'm not kidding when I say, I get inspired by anything.

*SteveJones313 So when was the last time when you've suddenly though "I HAVE to draw this"?

:iconloneswolf: Last night. After listening to 'Viva La Vida' by Coldplay. I had an image appearing in my head slowly everytime I listened to it, and it finally popped up in completion. So, right now, it's sitting on my newly erected art desk, waiting to be finished.

*SteveJones313 And how often do you get that feeling, that strongdesire and determination to draw a specific idea?

:iconloneswolf: For a specific idea, not very often. I often get inspired to draw doodles more then actual pictures. Now a days, when I get inspiration, my hands burn, and then I just start drawing. Kinda spacing out in the process, but not, and then by the time my hand stops burning, I have a completed picture. And I ment inspiration for a full fledged drawing that usually gets posted on my DA. In fact, my hands are burning right now. XD. But, I'll work on something as soon as I can.

*SteveJones313 So is there a particular genre of art that you prefer doing?

:iconloneswolf: Anime, though back in Ohio, I have a backing from tattoo parlors with tattoo art. Though, I don't ever post my tattoo art up, cuz I usually have to send it out to Ohio before I get a chance to scan it. In fact, my sister wants a drawing done by me on her shoulder. XD Though, my brother in law doesn't want her to get anymore tattoos.

*SteveJones313 Well if I ever choose to get a tatoo, I'll be sure to fly over your way.

:iconloneswolf: XDD I'd scan it and send it to you, that way you wouldn't have to waste money to fly over here just for a tattoo.

*SteveJones313 I'm sure I'd also make it a vacation :p I don't think I'd fly 7000 just for a tattoo, even if I was a millionaire.

:iconloneswolf: XDD Well then, if you ever were to fly over here, I'd bring you some ice cream. . .damnit, now I'm bringing up the food references. x.X

*SteveJones313 Yes, because what is a trip to an American Tattoo parlor without some icecream?

:iconloneswolf: Exactly, and Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream at that. Vermont's best.

*SteveJones313 Getting back to art, is there a particular work of art that has recently grabbed your attention? Any plugging for other artists you'd care to share?

:iconloneswolf: Hmmm. . .any art that's caught my eye. . .my friend :iconkiho: She was actually the first person to help me with anime art when I first started. Even though she doesn't have a lot of art posted, it's damn good. But, I still think she's a better artist them I am. XD However, she says that we're about the same

*SteveJones313 Are you a varied kind of person, or do you like a specific style of art?

:iconloneswolf: I'm someone who's varied. On other art sites I'm a part of, I often view realism, abstract, and the like. And always wanting to find something new.

*SteveJones313 So moving on - in ten minutes here in England, it will be midnight on October 1st - 3 months before the New Year. My question is, how has 2008 been for you? For example, if you were to label 2008 as "The Year Of..." what would it be?

:iconloneswolf: The Year Of New Beginnings for me. Early 2008, I found out that I could have contracted HIV from a friend of mine when we were in an accident. Talk about a scary moment. But now that almost a year has gone by, I can live a bit more comfortably with the fact that I DON'T have it. Not saying that it won't ever pop up in the future. But I'm looking forward to in a way starting over, possibly trying school, moving out of my current living situation, and for once live on my own without someone to rely on. And in a way starting over. So that's what I plan on doing for 2009. XD If that makes any sense.

*SteveJones313 Absolutely. So what do you hope 2009 will be "The Year Of..."?

:iconloneswolf: The year of hopefully getting out on my own XD Breaking free. . .however you want to look at it.

*SteveJones313 The Year of Freedom?

:iconloneswolf: *nods* Yeah, that sounds good. As you can tell, there are times when I suck for words. XD but i still want a payday.

*SteveJones313 Not at all...so, let's start bringing this show home. 3 months left before this year is over. What are your main goals for these 3 months?

:iconloneswolf: Eatting my way outta every buffet around my house *laughs* Just kidding. Saving up money to maybe eventually go on some sort of vacation and to improve my art, because I know that I can be better. ^_^; Very simple goals, but great goals as well.

*SteveJones313 So what do you hope to accomplish on dA?

:iconloneswolf: *sighs and looks up* I'm not really sure. I just want to be able to have people keep enjoying my art. Cuz without my watchers, I probably wouldn't have progressed. Cuz there are a few watchers I have, that aren't afraid to crituque my art, and will give me helpful pointers and links with whatever I need help with.

*SteveJones313 Well, in tradition of the "On The Sofa" show, I'd like to now hand over the reigns of the show to you and you can do what the hell you like - plug art, ask questions, hula dance, whatever you like. It's your show!

:iconloneswolf: o.0...*busts out the food* I'm gonna eat. . . XDD....I'm joking! uh. . . god. . . . uh. . . I say. . . Thanks for reading my interview. And if I put some of you to sleep. . . <.< That was totally my intention.

*SteveJones313 :lmao:

:iconloneswolf: XD But seriously, I hope I learn something from this later, or something, and I hope that maybe someone out there would like to talk to me. I'm ALWAYS online. Seriously. Ask Steve. So, yeah, if you all were interested in me after ze interview, but don't want to watch me, then go ahead and IM me via MSN or AIM. cuz Yahoo is full of evil monkeys that will eat your brain o.0 that, and I'm too cool for yahoo. *pops collar of shirt* So yeah. . .*stares at Steve* I'm going to knaw on his head for the last bit of entertainment for the night! *evil grin.* Ohhhh Steve. . .*grins evilly, pounces on your head, and starts knawing on it*

*SteveJones313 Well, just before you gnaw on my head, I want to take this moment to say how much fun this was. Seriously, thank you very much for coming on the show. Before we close, is there anything you want to quickly say to the readers?

:iconloneswolf: Uh. . . .beware the cake eatting fairies; they will choke you and make you an orphan - with their cake! @.@ Seriously! *goes back to knawing*

*SteveJones313 And on that positive note it's time to end. LoneSWolf, it's been amazing having you on the show! Good luck with the dA Corner Awards, good luck with all your plans and thank you once again for joining us today!

:iconloneswolf: Bye bye! *waves while she knaws*

*SteveJones313 Ladies and gentlemen, give it up for LONESWOLF!!!!!
